Concept

'Liberty Drives' is an initiative by The Hyde Park Appeal to provide free mobility for anyone who finds it difficult to see all 760 acres of these beautiful parks. We cater especially for those people who have known the parks for many years but are now unable to visit this natural expanse due to advanced age, disability or poor health which restricts their mobility. Electric buggies seating five people each glide around the parks providing half hour rides. It is also possible to be dropped off at a favourite place and be picked up later. This wonderful new scheme is supported by way of voluntary donations from the community and operated by the community by way of volunteer drivers.

History

Since 1997 'Liberty Drives' has been operating during the warmer months- May to October.Up to 12,000 people a year benefit from these delightful rides in the cool breeze amongst the trees. More and more elderly local residents are now able to meet new friends in the park, stop off for tea at one of the parks cafés or sit by one of the flower gardens and then be safely escorted back to the gate nearest their home.

Future

Short term: We are hoping to raise sufficient funds for two new electric buggys specificaly for people who cannot leave their wheelchairs.

Long term: We would also like to assist with the funding of a disabled toilet facility in the centre of the park.
